DISCover You: Who Are You Beyond Mom?

It was September 2018.

Standing in the middle of our newly quiet empty nest, surrounded by all the evidence of our once busy family life, wondering “who am I now?” Who am I beyond mom?

Maybe you’ve caught yourself staring in the mirror, barely recognizing the woman looking back at you, feeling lost without your familiar role as mom.

I want you to know something important: this feeling of being adrift isn’t the end of your story—it’s the beginning of a beautiful new chapter God has planned for you.

I believe that midlife is the open door to our wisdom years. A time of rediscovery. Our brains are wired to adapt and grow, and studies show that midlife is a unique season for change, rethinking our goals, and exploring new passions. It’s almost as if God built a reset button right when we need it most!

You might feel like your life has been one big, beautiful whirlwind—full of to-do lists, late-night talks, and endless schedules. But now, you have a fresh invitation to explore you. As Psalm 139:13-14 reminds us, “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.” God has been shaping you from the very beginning, planting unique gifts and dreams that might be ready to bloom in new ways now.

So, what’s next? How do you take that first step to grow into the purpose God has set out for you in this new season? Let’s talk about a few ways to get started.

One of the best tools to kick off your journey is something we use in the LEAD My Life program called the DISC Behavioral Assessment. Imagine a personality assessment that helps you uncover what makes you you—your strengths, how you communicate, and the way you connect with others. DISC can reveal so much about your unique personality style, giving you insights that make your relationships even better.
It’s amazing how much happier and more fulfilled we feel when we understand our communication style and how to connect with loved ones in a way that feels genuine. For example, DISC might reveal if you’re naturally an encourager, a motivator, or a calm support—insights that help you relate to your spouse, adult children, friends, and coworkers in new and fulfilling ways. Think about it: your relationships can deepen as you learn what makes each of you tick. Science shows that meaningful relationships are one of the biggest contributors to life satisfaction, especially in midlife.

In our LEAD My Life program, the DISC Assessment is our first step, helping you gain insights into how you relate to others and creating a solid foundation for your next steps. DISC doesn’t just help you see who you are; it gives you powerful ways to make a difference in the lives of those around you.

I love to guide my clients back to being uniquely you. Doing something that we often neglected to do during the crazy days of motherhood – Reflect, Reset, and Renew. It’s all about rediscovering your purpose in a way that feels right for this season of life. Here’s how it works:

Reflect: The first step in rediscovery is reflection. Take time to revisit moments that brought you joy, fulfillment, and a sense of purpose. Maybe it was a hobby you loved or a project you worked on passionately. Studies show that reflecting on positive past experiences actually boosts our brain’s serotonin levels, which makes us feel happier and helps us see what truly matters to us. These memories are clues to who you are at your core.

Reset: With the insights from your DISC Assessment, you’re ready to reset how you approach relationships and connections. Resetting means understanding your natural strengths and communication style so you can relate to others in ways that foster harmony and connection. Psychology research shows that self-awareness is a key factor in building deep relationships, which are essential for mental well-being. Resetting your approach helps you nurture these bonds in new, meaningful ways.

Renew: This is where transformation takes place. Renewing is about embracing your identity as a faith-fueled impact maker, using the gifts God has placed in you to bless others. Neuroscience shows that living with purpose can release dopamine in the brain, which boosts happiness and motivation. Renewal is all about stepping forward with intention, aligning your life with your values, and finding new ways to share your gifts.

This journey—Reflect, Reset, and Renew—brings clarity and reminds you of the unique path God has laid out for you. And it’s a beautiful journey worth taking.

Rediscovering yourself and stepping into your purpose isn’t just about doing something new; it’s about connecting with the person you’ve always been. Studies show that a strong sense of purpose is linked to better mental health, lower stress, and increased overall happiness. When we understand who we are and live with intention, we experience the joy and fulfillment God intended for us. As Ephesians 2:10 says, “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”

Rediscovery isn’t about adding to your to-do list; it’s about leaning into the gifts and strengths that are already within you and sharing them with the world. You’re already equipped to be a blessing to others, and this season is your chance to explore how.

Rediscovering who you are is an adventure, and I want to invite you to explore this path with support and encouragement. The LEAD My Life program begins with the DISC Assessment and then provides community, connection, coaching and lasting change. The main objective is to help you gain confidence, reignite purpose and become the faith fueled impact maker God created you to be!
